What is metal purity / "caratage"?"Caratage" is how jewellers measure the content of gold within in a piece of jewellery. In simple terms it tells us what percentage of a piece is solid gold. - 22 carat gold (91.6% gold, 8.4% other alloy metals. This means 916 parts of 1000 are gold) - 18 carat gold (75.0% gold, 25.0% other alloy metals. This means 750 parts of 1000 are gold) - 14 carat gold (58.5% gold, 41.5% other alloy metals. This means 585 parts of 1000 are gold) - 9 carat gold (37.5% gold, 62.5% other alloy metals. This means 375 parts of 1000 are gold) Higher carat pieces are softer than lower carat pieces. If your'e looking for a ring with gemstones set or a daily wear piece, we would usually suggest investing in a piece between 9ct-14ct as the gold is more durable and robust.

What is a hallmark?A hallmark is a series of stamped letters, symbols and numbers which when researched can pinpoint exactly where, when and who made the jewellery you see in store. A hallmark traditionally is made up of a: - Sponsor mark - Finesse mark (metal purity) - Assay office mark Sometimes these stamps can be worn or missing entirely due to age, resizing and other factors. If a piece is not hallmarked the relevant testing is undertaken.
